What is Graphic Design?
Graphic design is the art of using graphic elements and text to communicate an idea or concept. It is a form of communication in which graphic media -such as color, symbol, and typeface- are used to convey a message. Through the combination of words, pictures and illustrations, it is possible to create a distinctive and meaningful design. In order to be efficient, a design needs to convey a visual image that is attractive and clear. For this purpose, it is necessary to arrange type and visual elements, and also specify the kind of paper, the printing processes and the ink colors to be used in the process.

There is a wide range of elements that can be used to create a graphic design. The most common include typography, photography, illustration, iconography, 3D graphics, and branding. Its most frequent use is for commercial purposes: to convey a specific and persuasive message to a large audience, a company´s target or the public in general. Generally speaking, its objetive is to increase the sales of a product or service, or to spread information.
The term graphic design refers to the design process, which encompasses the transformation of ideas and concepts into visual elements. It is the art of making books, magazines, advertisements and packaging, among others. The process is complex and must be carried out by professionals who are responsible and skilled. It begins with a previous research on the product, service or piece of information to present. Secondly it is necessary to make a sketch and re-evaluation of the results, and the final step is the revision of the overall final composition.
Basically, design is a bi-dimensional activity that encompasses the arrangement of shapes in a four-side surface that is usually flat. Inside this surface there appear words and images. Depending on the function of the design and on the preferences of the client, the design can be made up of either isolated words or complete sentences or paragraphs. Images go from simple drawings to photographs and pictures. Take notice that although the use of images is sometimes very profitable, it is recommended to avoid using complex imaginery, since too many details may make the audience lose the focus of attention and the design lose effectiveness. Later in this website we will acquaint you with the Principles of design and you will learn that emphasis –the use of a focal point- is one of the determining factors in graphic design.
